Diagnosis and treatment of skin-related conditions that can cause discomfort, pain, and illness.
Your pet’s skin is the largest organ comprising their body. The skin acts as the first barrier to harm from outdoor sources. As a result, it is incredibly important to maintain that barrier to the best of our ability. Skin issues can arise when environmental factors or metabolic changes negatively impact the skin.
Bacterial skin infections have multiple causes. Underlying allergies, moist hot weather and exposure to contaminated water can all cause bacteria to invade the skin and cause a problem. Redness, itchiness, discharge and odour are all signs of infection. Bacterial skin infections are typically diagnosed by examining a sample taken from the skin under the microscope for bacteria. In some circumstances, a sample of the bacteria is sent to a lab where it is grown and tested against multiple antibiotics to determine the most effective treatment. This is called a culture and sensitivity, and it is particularly important in cases of drug-resistant bacteria.
Contrary to popular belief, ringworm is a fungal skin infection (not a parasite). It can be treated with topical antifungal creams and or shampoos.
Allergies fall into two categories: food and environmental. Environmental allergies or atopy are more common than food allergies. Regardless of the cause, allergies can be time-consuming, expensive and frustrating for you (and for us!). There are many treatment options for allergies. We can help you determine the one best suited for your dog.
A variety of organisms can cause parasitic skin diseases. Some of these are visible to the naked eye. However, many can only be seen under the microscope. Both oral and topical medications are available to treat parasitic infections.
Hormonal skin diseases, also caused endocrine skin disease, are caused by hormonal imbalances in the body and are often only one sign of these complex diseases. Disorders of the thyroid and adrenal glands are examples of endocrine disorders that can manifest as skin disease.
